Medicare Coverage

Residents of Canada can use their Medicare health insurance to cover their consultation and most other medical services. In order to be covered by Medicare, you need both:

  • a valid Medicare card from the province or territory in which you are a resident, and
  • a written referral for each appointment from a doctor or dentist registered with the NB Department of Health.

Because of the latter requirement, this office requires a copy of a valid referral on file in advance of booking the appointment. This referral can be mailed, faxed, or dropped off in person. If you fax it, you will need to bring in the original with you when you come for your appointment.

About Your Medicare Card

In a memorandum from the New Brunswick Department of Health and Community Services (now the New Brunswick Department of Health and Wellness) dated 26 August 1992, physicians across the province were notified that "...all persons who do not have a new Medicare card on September 1, 1992 must be treated as uninsured persons of New Brunswick Medicare and thereafter will be financially responsible for all medical and hospital services received."

In such cases, the uninsured person may be asked for payment at the time of service. This inconvenience can be avoided by ensuring that you currently have a valid New Brunswick Medicare Card.

The same memo goes on to say, "it is the responsibility of New Brunswick residents to ensure that they have continuous coverage from Medicare." What does this mean? Check the expiry date on your card. If the card is expired you are also considered an uninsured person. If it is expired, contact the Department of Health for your new card. They can be reached at:

Post Office Box 5100
Fredericton, New Brunswick
Canada E3B 5G8

or call Service New Brunswick at (888) 762-8600
or telephone Medicare directly at (506) 453-2161

Just as importantly, when you present yourself for medical services at a medical office or hospital throughout the country, make sure you have your Medicare card with you. Without your card, your health insurance coverage cannot be confirmed and it is possible you will be responsible for payment of all services rendered.

Uninsured Services

Some medical services, and all administrative type services, are not insurable under New Brunswick Department of Health and Community Services, Medicare guidelines. Non-insured medical and administrative services include, but are not limited to:

  • any service requested by a third party (e.g.: insurance company or law firm),
  • prescription renewals,
  • telephone advice,
  • medical equipment such as sutures, bandages, and dressings,
  • photocopying of medical reports,
  • transfer of medical chart,
  • medical-legal reports,
  • long-distance telephone calls,
  • facsimile charges,
  • missed appointments, and
  • disability and insurance forms.

The fees for these types of services are the responsibility of the patient. The amount charged will depend on the length and complexity of the service and therefore impossible to estimate here. If requested, we will be happy to provide an estimate.
